3 must-have outfits for your senior session
One of the most common questions I get from seniors is, 'What should I wear for my senior session?' While planning outfits can sometimes feel overwhelming, I’ve put together a simple guide to help you choose three must-have outfits for your shoot. With these essential looks, you’ll be ready to feel confident and picture-perfect on the big day!
The Everyday Outfit
The Everyday Outfit is exactly what it sounds like—your go-to look that reflects your personal casual style. Start with your favorite pair of fashion jeans and build from there!
For young women, this often means a pants-based outfit—think jeans paired with a nice sweatshirt, a tank top and pants, or even a jumper. Add a touch of flair with jewelry to elevate the look. For young men, this might be jeans or shorts, with personality added through accessories like hats, sneakers, or a lightweight button-up or flannel.
This outfit should feel like you, but a slightly polished version—clean, neat (think ironed or steamed), and a little more dressed up than what you'd typically wear to school. Neutral and casual tones work great for this first look. Keep in mind, this is the outfit we’ll use for sitting, kneeling, and exploring off the trail, so comfort and flexibility are key!
The Express Yourself Outfit
The Express Yourself outfit is all about showcasing your unique interests and passions! Senior sessions are designed to tell your story through images that truly reflect who you are.
Back in high school, I was an artist, a musician, and a swimmer. In my spare time, I loved to rollerblade (super 90s, I know!). If I had a senior session back then, I could have easily brought my guitar, rollerblades, or even my camera—all of which would have told the story of who I was at that moment in time.
Every senior is different, and I’ve had the honor of photographing track stars, drummers, skateboarders, dancers, cheerleaders, and more. This second outfit is your chance to highlight what makes you you. Whether it’s a track uniform, running shoes, a letterman’s jacket, poms, or even a cello—bring clothing or items that represent your passions and interests. Let’s capture the essence of who you are in this exciting chapter of your life!
Simple & Elegant Outfit
The final outfit, whether you’re changing one or four times, should be simple yet elegant—your most dressed-up look. This is the showstopper, the outfit that makes you shine. We’ve already captured your casual side and showcased your interests; now it’s time to see you polished and radiant!
Think of that classic moment in an 80s movie when the high schooler walks down the stairs, dressed for prom, and everyone is stunned: Wow! Damn! They clean up nice! Again, showing my age! Sigh. It’s been a while people!
For young women, I love flowing maxi dresses that add a touch of elegance and free, breezy movement. For young men, this could mean a sharp suit, slacks, and a button-up shirt. Neutral, light colors work beautifully to highlight your appearance during this fleeting moment in life. Avoid bold patterns, logos, or brand names to keep the focus on you. Clean, simple, and timeless is the goal for this final outfit—it’s your moment to truly shine.
Your senior session is a celebration of who you are—your style, your passions, and the polished, confident person you’ve become. From the casual authenticity of your Everyday Outfit to the personal flair of your Express Yourself look, and finally, the elegance of your Showstopper outfit, each choice helps tell your unique story. These moments are about capturing the essence of you during this exciting chapter of life. So come as you are, and let’s create images that you’ll treasure forever—ones that reflect your journey and the incredible person you are right now.
