Most commonly asked questions for senior sessions
Senior sessions can feel overwhelming. I often get asked questions like: When should I book? What should I wear? How long does it take to get my photos back?
I get it, I have had two graduates—it’s a lot to think about. That’s why I’m here to guide you every step of the way, answering your questions and helping you feel confident and prepared. making the experience seamless and stress-free.
Let me answer the most commonly asked questions here.
When should I book?
One of the most common questions I get asked is, “When should I book my senior portraits?” It’s a great question and an important one! Several factors come into play: the season, the weather, and your yearbook deadline.
Let’s start with the season. From December to March, Colorado is chilly, with unpredictable weather. While winter-themed portraits can be stunning—especially for senior skiers or anyone dreaming of snowy vibes—most people find it more enjoyable to schedule sessions between April and October. Keep in mind, September and October are peak photography months. This means schedules fill up quickly, popular locations can be crowded, and the experience may feel a little more hectic.
Next, your yearbook deadline is key. While I’ve always delivered photos on time, it’s best to leave some breathing room. A buffer between your session and your yearbook submission date helps avoid unnecessary stress and gives us time to perfect your portraits.
So, when’s the ideal time to book? My short answer: June through September. October works too, but it’s often a last resort for those who forgot to schedule earlier. Planning ahead ensures a smoother, more relaxed senior portrait experience!
What should I wear?
This is the big question: What should I wear? I know choosing outfits for your senior session can feel overwhelming, so I’ve created several resources to make the process easier for you.
First, check out this blog post where I detail three essential outfits to consider for your senior session, along with the best order to wear them. Second, I’ve put together a Pinterest board full of fashion inspiration and another featuring my favorite brands to help you get started on your search. Finally, browse my senior portfolio to see what past seniors have worn during their sessions—you’ll find plenty of ideas!
Here’s the short version: Plan three outfits.
The Nice Casual Look: Start with something neutral and relaxed, like jeans and a classic top.
The Personality Piece: This outfit should reflect who you are—your hobbies and passions. Think track suits, letterman jackets, pom-poms, drumsticks, or anything that tells your story.
The Dressy Showstopper: End with a more formal look, like a long dress for the ladies or a sharp suit for the guys.
In general, I recommend keeping your outfits neutral in color and adding personality with accessories. Hats, statement necklaces, jackets, and other removable details can elevate your look while making it easy to customize your style throughout the session.
How long does it take to get my photos back?
This is the panicked question I always get from the mom or senior who booked in October with a yearbook deadline just a week away. I have to laugh because, honestly, this happens every single year. And you know what? I can’t judge—because I am that parent! I’m the one texting my friend who’s on the yearbook committee the night before the deadline, scrambling for last-minute answers. So trust me, if you’re in this boat, you’re in good company.
I strive for a 2-3 week turnaround for all my galleries, and that’s always my goal. I work hard to stick to this timeline. That said, during the busy fall season, when senior portraits and yearbook deadlines collide, I do prioritize senior galleries over other sessions (like families or events without tight deadlines). If needed, I can turn around a senior gallery in one week, but let’s be real—for both my sanity and yours, it’s so much better to plan for that three-week window whenever possible. This gives us plenty of time for edits, adjustments, and to avoid unnecessary stress.
How many outfit changes can I do?
The first package is the Yearbook Essential—perfect for the senior who just wants a great yearbook photo without all the extras. They show up in one outfit, we capture a timeless portrait, and they’re done! As a mom of two college kids, I can tell you—this was exactly what BOTH of my kiddos wanted. Maybe it’s because they grew up with a photographer for a mom, but they just wanted a quick pic and to be on their way!
The second option is the Classic Senior Session, which includes 1-2 outfit changes. This experience is fantastic for seniors who want a bit more variety—whether it’s different styles, moods, or simply having more choices for their yearbook and prints. Check out my blog on 3 must have outfits for advice on how to plan this classic senior experience!
The final and most personalized option is the Luxury Senior Experience. This session allows for 1-3 (or more) outfit changes and the flexibility to shoot at multiple locations. It’s designed for seniors and their families who want to fully celebrate this milestone with a dynamic and memorable session.
At the end of the day, the number of outfit changes comes down to the senior’s personality and preferences. I generally recommend 1-2 outfit changes at a minimum, with no more than four overall. Once you go beyond four, the constant switching can take away from the experience and become more of a distraction than a benefit.
Do you travel?
I absolutely love this question! The answer is a resounding YES! While I adore capturing senior portraits in Boulder and the surrounding areas, I also love traveling to stunning locations like Colorado Springs, Estes Park, and beyond. If it’s within a three-hour drive, count me in! And if your dream session is a little farther, I’m happy to make it happen—just note that travel costs may apply. Colorado is full of breathtaking backdrops, and I’m always up for an adventure to create the perfect senior session for you!
Can I bring my pup to my senior session?
YES! YES! YES!
Absolutely! Your furry best friend is more than welcome at your senior session! 🐶✨ As a pet-friendly photographer (and a devoted animal lover myself), I truly believe our pets are part of the family and should be included in life’s biggest moments. Whether your pup is your adventure buddy, cuddle companion, or simply your shadow, they deserve a spot in your senior photos! Just bring a leash, some treats, water, and cleanup bags, and we’ll make sure to capture beautiful moments with your four-legged friend by your side.
