Tips for a Successful Colorado Outdoor Sessions

As I sit at home with bug bites all over my legs, it occurs to me that it's time to write this blog to help both my wonderful community and myself remember important tips for a successful photography session in Colorado.

Tip #1: Bring Bug Spray

I would be hard-pressed not to bring this tip up first, as I am currently suffering from not following my own advice: BRING BUG SPRAY! Not all locations in Colorado have tons of mosquitos, but any location with even a small stream absolutely does. So, come prepared with bug spray on and extra in your purse. Colorado is beautiful, and my water locations are gorgeous—being comfortable at them is key, so prepare accordingly.

Tip #2: Stay Hydrated

This is important for all photography sessions, but especially true for maternity sessions. Being in the Mile High City means Colorado is a dry state with high altitude. Combine that with hiking out to locations, and you need water! Drink before, during, and after the session. Staying hydrated is crucial for your comfort and well-being, especially during summer and fall sessions. Photography sessions are usually roughly an hour, but don't underestimate how much happier and comfortable you'll be with water, particularly if you're pregnant.

Tip #3: Bring Comfortable Shoes

Bring shoes you can walk in. If you're looking for a photographer who thinks high heels are a great idea, that isn’t me—unless they are boots, then that totally is me. I'll take you off trail, and there are cacti at most locations. If you truly want open-toed shoes, bring a pair you can change into and sneakers or hiking shoes for getting to the location. Some clients go barefoot once we reach certain spots, and I love the nature mama look, but they bring a change of shoes for getting there.

Tip #4: Bring Baby Wipes for Kiddos

If you have kiddos, bring baby wipes. I remember clearly being the mom with the diaper bag and being so happy to ditch it and travel light. So, I kind of hate giving this tip, but to be totally honest, a photography session is not the time to travel light. Bring baby wipes for boogers, dirt, and snack crumbs. I edit, but there is nothing like a kiddo with a clean face to start with.

Remembering these simple tips can make your photography session in Colorado much more enjoyable and successful. Let's capture those beautiful moments comfortably and prepared! My next blog will be about what to do when you forget bug spray and have lots of bug bites! :-)
